Orton Slough drainage project near Salix, IA still up in the air

You may not always notice drains when you walk or drive down the street, but for some people in Woodbury County, drainage is a concern.

That's because rain water goes through the Orton Slough drainage district much slower than it should.

But, as of now, it's unclear if the issue will be resolved.

The county supervisors act as trustees for the project and county engineer Mark Nahra is helping gauge community reaction.

He sent out a letter to landowners in the area to see if they wanted to pursue the project, since they'll be the ones footing the bill.

He asked for responses by April 15.

So, far the replies haven't been overwhelming.

"We received 14 responses out of the 33 letters that we mailed, of those 14, ten landowners, or people representing the properties, were in favor of continuing with an Orton Slough drainage improvement project," Nahra said.

But, that leaves 19 landowners that never gave their input.

The proposed plans for the project range from about $430,000 to more than $780,000.

Nahra says he plans to present more information about who's on board at next week's supervisor's meeting and within the next few weeks they plan to hold a public forum.
