South Sioux's city council approves fire budget for new employees, facility upgrade

The South Sioux City Fire Department is growing. The city council has approved a plan to add two new paid firefighters to the staff. The department currently has two other paid firefighters and 25 volunteers. The council also approved a plan to re-work Fire Hall One so it can hold a full-sized fire truck so that the department no longer has to custom order a smaller, more expensive one. They don't have set numbers on just how much money this will cost yet, but it will be decided at a city council meeting on Monday, April 28.

Senate renews effort to legalize medical marijuana

A renewed effort to legalize the use of medical marijuana to treat chronic epilepsy has won support in the Iowa Legislature. The Senate Ways and Means Committee approved a measure Wednesday that would allow the medical use of oil derived from marijuana as a last-resort treatment for chronic epilepsy. It is now eligible for floor debate.

Storm Lake, Iowa cleans up community's biggest attraction

Dredging resumed on Storm Lake this week. This city has opened a new site to dump the sediment that's removed from the lake, because the old site was filled. The dredging project has been going on for more than 10 years in an effort to make the lake deeper and cleaner.

Yankton archery facility makes a bid for junior Olympic precursor to Rio 2016

The Easton Yankton Archery Center in South Dakota is putting in a bid to host the archery portion of next year's Junior Olympics. World Archery hosts its Junior Olympic games in cities all over the world. The Yankton facility manager said they're competing against some big cities in exotic places, but he thinks they have a good shot. They hope to hear whether they get it within ten days.
