SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - On October 4th, 2013 severe weather ripped through Siouxland states. Tornadoes touched down causing major damage across Siouxland, but fortunately no loss of life.
Imagine your car being lifted off the road by a tornado you didn't even know was there.
That's what happened to Linda Krei of Sioux City.
And while Linda only received minor injuries, she learned a major lesson that we all can learn from.
It's a story that Linda Krei never would have dreamt she'd have to tell.
"I had been in Coralville all week at a conference. On my way back, I really hadn't thought about what was going on on this side of the state".
What was going on, was a rare October outbreak of very strong tornadoes, as two EF-4 tornadoes touched down in Siouxland, one with 170 mph winds and a width of nearly a mile and a half.
But, Linda was listening to an audio book and was unaware of the danger developing ahead.
"I literally hit a wall of wind and rain. It totally took me off guard. My car lifted and I ended up perpendicular on the interstate. Then a pickup truck and trailer headed my way and he hit my passenger side and he t-boned me and that spun me into the median."
Luckily Linda was not badly injured. She wouldn't find out until later that it was a tornado that she has just drive into.
"Who would have thought in October that you would have tornadoes you need to be aware of, but I certainly learned that I was distracted from my surroundings enough that that was a lesson to be learned. Know your conditions!"
Linda hope we all can learn from her experience. She has learned and knows how lucky she was.
"I'm a person of strong faith and I believe I was surrounded by some kind of protection…guardian angels…whatever you'd like to call them, to tell my story for other and to get on with doing good. I've got a lot more on this Earth I need to do."
