The Arbor Day Foundation names Sioux City a 2013 Tree City USA

Sioux City is being recognized for its commitment to growing trees.

Officially, the city is being honored for "effective urban forest management." So, city leaders planted a new tree at the Sergeant Floyd Monument. The Arbor Day Foundation named Sioux City a 2013 Tree City USA.

Sioux City achieved this status by meeting four requirements: maintaining a tree department; having a community tree ordinance; creating an annual forestry budget; and, recognizing Arbor Day.

"And we celebrate our commitment to the people and trees of Sioux City and thank you for helping to create a healthier planet for all of us," said Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott.

The city also received a $20,000 "Trees Please" grant from MidAmerican Energy. The company hands out those funds each year to 80 cities across Iowa. The money is used to help improve the physical appearance of communities through the planting of trees.
