Tornadoes in the central and southern U.S. have left a path of destruction, killing at least 17 people.  Sixteen of those fatalities occurred in Arkansas, where a huge tornado cut a sporadic 80-mile path through the central part of the state.  The same storm system produced a tornado that killed a person in Oklahoma, before moving north into Kansas.

Tornadoes and strong storms leave one dead in southeastern Iowa

At least two tornadoes were spotted in southeastern Iowa on Sunday and at least one fatality is confirmed in Keokuk County as a result of the strong storms.  Wind damage was reported in several towns as gusts neared 90 miles per hour and hail up to 1-inch in diameter fell.  One person was hurt when a barn was blown over near Martinsburg.

Siouxland leaders head to the nation's capital

Government and business leaders in the tri-state area head to Washington, D.C. this week for the annual Siouxland Steak Dinner and Lobbying trip.  One request they'll make is for more funding for the Interstate 29 widening project.  City engineers originally estimated the cost of moving water and sewer lines for the project at $25 million.  Now, they say it will be nearly double that amount.  Officials will also seek support for the Highway 20 project, an expressway in northeast Nebraska, and a bridge over railroad tracks between Floyd Boulevard and Stueben Street.

Buena Vista Co. veterans prepare for the trip of a lifetime

Two Storm Lake, Iowa men will travel to the nation's capital next month to see the memorial built in their honor.  Bill Wessendorf and Robert Meseck are Korean War Veterans.  They're among those who will be on an Honor Flight out of Fort Dodge on May 10.  In addition to the Korean War Memorial, they will see the Iwo Jima Memorial, World War II Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery.
