State Appeal Board upholds Sioux County's 2014-2015 budget after citizen challenge

The state of Iowa has sided with Sioux County over a tax protest brought on by 100 residents. Earlier this month, the state appeal board held a hearing in Orange City at the request of the New Broom Society. The group claimed that the county published a budget with a $10 million surplus after figures showed a $700,000 deficit. The county said the original figure was just an estimate and that several projects that didn't come to fruition left the county with extra money.

Lawsuit challenges Iowa 'blacklist'

A lawsuit, filed by three former Iowa executive branch employees, says the state's so-called blacklist is illegal. The people who filed the class action lawsuit Monday in Polk County said they were put on the list without their knowledge and disqualified from future state employment when they were terminated. It also alleges the nearly 1,000 people on the list were denied their right to due process. The Department of Administrative Services argues that administrative rules give it the ability to disqualify applicants based on their previous firings.

Construction is moving along at the building site for the school located on the corner of Glenn Avenue and Martha Street, where the old Washington Elementary used to stand. Sioux City's newest school doesn't have a name just yet. That's why some Sioux City students are casting their ballots to pick a name for their new school. Students from Washington and Whittier Elementary are voting on four school names. They are Discovery, Journey, Lewis, and Morningside.
