State officials approve Cedar County, NE school mergers.

CEDAR COUNTY, Neb. (KTIV/US92) - Cedar County Nebraska will have two new school districts beginning this fall.

The Department of Education's Committee for the Reorganization of School Districts met Tuesday morning to hear two separate petitions.

Legal council for the committee says the petitions involved the merger of Laurel-Concord with Coleridge as well as Hartington with Newcastle.

When the meeting adjourned, both petitions were approved, which means all the legal work has been completed.

"It will take effect on August first of 2014. The communities, the school board members, the administration and staff, just need to move forward with all of the procedures and processes they had planned to do," said Brian Halstead, legal council for the Committee for the Reorganization of School Districts.

Schools like Newcastle have struggled with shrinking enrollment.

Its final senior class has only five students.
