State officials approve Cedar County, NE school mergers

Cedar County Nebraska will have two new school districts beginning this fall. The Department of Education's Committee for the Reorganization of School Districts met Tuesday to hear two separate petitions. Legal council for the committee said the petitions involved the merger of Laurel-Concord with Coleridge and Hartington with Newcastle. When the meeting ended, both petitions were approved, meaning all the legal work has been completed. Schools like Newcastle have struggled with shrinking enrollment. Its final senior class has only five students.

Homeowner near CF expansion site expresses concerns about county roads

Woodbury County officials are reviewing bids for a road project connected to the CF Industries expansion. Bids for the road off 255th Street range from $525,000 to $634,000. The county typically awards the lowest bidder that's qualified to do the work, but the county engineer said before that's finalized, he needs to go through to make sure the numbers add up. Grading is expected to start June 1.

Woodbury Co. supervisors consider "looping technology" for the hearing impaired

Woodbury County supervisors hear a pitch for a system to help the hearing impaired participate in their meetings. Dick Salem of the Sertoma Club asked supervisors to consider installing a "looping system" in the board room. It works like Wi-Fi for people with hearing aids. A looping system was installed in city council chambers last week. Salem said a system for the county board room would cost about $1,000 and the Sertoma Club would help pay for the new system.
