The final push to the Nebraska primary is on for six Republicans fighting for the right to represent the GOP in the race for governor.

Two of the six candidates were in Dakota City, Neb. at a meet-and-greet hosted by the Dakota County Republican Party.

One of them was former state auditor and state senator Mike Foley.

Foley has spent 14 years in elected office, and says his top goal, if elected, is to lower Nebraska's tax burden, which is one of the highest in the United States.

Foley spent eight years as state auditor and says his experience dealing with finances is a big advantage.

"It's a great training ground as state auditor," said Foley. "You learn so much about the complexity of state government. And if you don't have that understanding, you can make some pretty big blunders, which I will be able to avoid because I have the knowledge base of how government can function and should function."

The other candidate at the meet-and-greet Wednesday was Beau McCoy.

In addition to serving as a state senator, McCoy also owns a construction company.

As a small business owner, he wants to continue Gov. Dave Heineman's efforts to lower taxes and grow the economy.

Both candidates are preparing for Thursday night's debate in Omaha, which is the last one before the primary election.

During the last debate, in Norfolk, Neb., McCoy set a bold goal if he's elected.

"If I didn't cut property taxes by $100 million, grow jobs by 10,000, and travel 100,000 miles around the state and the world to promote jobs in Nebraska, I wouldn't run for re-election," said McCoy.

The primary takes place on May 13.
