Iowa man receives 50-year pilot award

The annual safety aviation meeting in South Sioux City, Nebraska was a little more special Wednesday night.

Dr. John Garred, Sr. received the 50-year "Wright Brothers Master Pilot" award from the FAA.

Garred started flying in 1943. He used a plane to court his wife when they were dating.

Even his wife got an award for her support role.

Garred says the award was a surprise.

"This is definitely a surprise. Getting this award is really overwhelming. Bunch of my friends older fliers and long time friends that have received it already. It's special for anyone that flies cause it's not given except but once a year," said Dr. John Garred, Sr.

Garred also received an award for being the longest-serving "aviation medical examiner" in the country.
