SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

On Saturday, area kids competed for a spot in a state track meet.

Events included the 100 meter dash, 4 by 1 relay, and standing long jump.

First place winners earned a spot at the state meet in Marshalltown, Iowa, and from there, they can qualify to advance to the North American finals.

Some of the youngsters said dedicating time to their sport now will pay off later.

"It's better to start early because then you have more experience and you know what's going on," 11-year-old Katrina Ghosh said.

"It's an exercise and it's kind of healthy for you. And, if you get better and better, you can just start to run faster and faster," 9-year-old Xavier Lopez said.

Lopez said for him, it's not all about winning.

It's about having fun and trying your hardest.
