Man accused of fatally shooting a Rockwell City police officer is found competent to stand trial

ROCKWELL CITY, Iowa (KTIV) The man charged with fatally shooting a Rockwell City, Iowa police officer has been found competent to stand trial.

Corey Trott is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Officer Jamie Buenting last September.

Buenting was one of several officers who were attempting to serve Trott with a warrant on charges of assaulting his mother, when police say Trott fired a high-powered rifle.  The shot hit Officer Buenting, killing him.

In February, a judge suspended Trott's court proceedings until a mental health evaluation was complete.  That was done on April 15th.  A doctor says Trott is competent.

Prosecutors are now requesting the judge re-instate the court proceedings and set a trial date.
