SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

A new crop of kids has been chosen for their hard work in and out of the classroom.

The Sioux City Mayor's Youth Commission received 43 applications for the Youth Ambassadors program.

Monday night, in front of their families, they received recognition for their character and community service.

A dozen students were also selected to be mentored by members of the Mayor's Youth Commission.

Made up of 4th through 7th graders, Youth Ambassadors is considered a stepping stone to the Mayor's Youth Commission.

"We really want them to develop life skills. We want them to be able to join in the Mayor's Youth Commission when they get into high school and be able to participate, and this is kind of getting them inducted into it at a younger age,” said Emma Morgan, who chaired the committee that chose the youth ambassadors mentor group.

Letters of recommendation were submitted by teachers, family, and community members.
