Vietnam Memorial Wall panels arrive at the Siouxland Freedom Park

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KTIV) - An important part of the memorial that will go in the Siouxland Freedom Park arrives in South Sioux City, Nebraska.

The black granite panels with the names of the 58,000 Americans who died in Vietnam are arrived in Siouxland Wednesday morning.

"We had to go up and touch them because we all have brothers and sisters on that wall, and that means a lot," said Wayne Thieman, American Legion Riders Post 241.

The panels were escorted by police and American Legion Riders to the park site on Riverview Drive.

"This is one of the great things about being a member of the American Legion Riders is being able to do these escorts to give honor to our fallen soldiers," said Allen Willett, American Legion Riders post 241. "To bring this wall into South Sioux City to give it the respect and also the people that have died for that wall."

Veterans at the event say it's exciting to have a memorial right here in Siouxland.

"It means a lot to have an actual wall this close to home. So, I'm sure I will be down visiting quite often," said Kenneth Becker, American Legion Riders Post 241.

"We don't have to go back to Washington D.C. to the wall and make that 3,000 mile trip that we did last year out in random mountains and stuff, it's right here," said Thieman.

"It means a lot to have an actual wall this close to home," said Becker. "So, I'm sure I will be down visiting quiet often."

Crews will begin installing the granite panels on Friday.A full dedication ceremony will be held at the memorial on May 28.

"It warms your heart. We're doing it in memory of our fallen soldiers," said Willett.

"It's absolutely going to be gorgeous," said Thieman. "To see the wall here, I don't know the words to describe the feelings. It's just remarkable."
