Arnolds Park unveils newly renovated roller coaster just in time for warm season

ARNOLDS PARK, Iowa (KTIV) - A storied staple in Arnolds Park on Okoboji Lake is back up and running, and just in time for the park's open season.

The Legend roller coaster is the park's most popular ride, and it's just that: legendary.

"The Legend has got so many fond memories for people that come here to our park. They can remember going on it when they were a little kid," Di Lorenzen, Marketing and Communications Manager.

This year, during the off season, The Legend got a facelift, and just in time, according to Arnolds Park officials.

"I am so excited to have this ride back up and running the way it should be. We were starting to have a lot of problems with the coaster, we'd seen it was deteriorating. We needed to do something about it," Digger Nelson, Operations Manager.

But, Nelson says the changes to the roller coaster didn't make it any less thrilling of a ride.

The team that made some changes shaved almost 10 seconds off the ride, making it just as fast and furious as ever.

After you hit the point of no return, your hands fly straight up, and you stay laughing and screaming for the whole one minute and five seconds of fun.

"We raised some of the batters so that you didn't go straight into a curve. Before you went right down and came right up, now it's more gradual," Nelson said.

For The Legend's very first post-renovation exhibition, Arnolds Park brought in 13-year-old Presley Cochran-Bray, a local girl who's overcome some serious health problems.

Her father likened those health problems to a roller coaster ride, and Arnolds Park thought it was only right to have her flip the switch for The Legend's first new journey.

"She had a liver transplant, and through that journey, it's all the ups and downs. You're doing good, and then you have a little setback, then you're doing good, then another setback. Then you finally get to the end of that journey," Lorenzen said.

And now that the roller coaster is ready... the park is almost set for opening.

"I'm excited. We've got a lot of things to do around here, but we're going to get them done," Nelson said.

"It's so great to have all the kids, and see all the smiles, and everybody's laughing, everybody's having fun. It's so wonderful to have all the kids back," Lorenzen said.

And, this year, a whole new slew of 48-inch-tall kids, who can't wait to get on The Legend to make their first legendary memories.
