Brad, Nick and Matt took pitches from Explorers pitcher Kenny Long on Thursday.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
After taking batting practice on Tuesday, KTIV was finally prepped and ready to take their official hacks against a professional pitcher Thursday.
Brad Pautsch, Nick Filipowski and Matt Breen finally took some cuts to try and get a hit off of Sioux City Explorers pitcher Kenny Long.
Brad took the first swings of the day against Long. Getting used to the speed and movement of a professional pitcher threw Brad off a bit, as he laughed at a few early whiffs.
But in the end, he was able to escape the infield a few times.
"Out in front of the breaking ball a little bit, but you know, Brad hit the ball," said Montgomery. "Kind of a pull hitter. Obviously, left on right, he's supposed to have the advantage."
Just as he did in batting practice, Nick impressed the X's coaching staff, as he was able to drive balls into the outfield early and often.
It wasn't all fun and games, however. Nick broke Brad's bat on one of his swings, and one of the pitches was slider in the dirt that he had to leap to dodge, landing on his stomach in the process.
"Nick, hey, he put the ball in play all day," said Montgomery. "You know, had a couple line drives, put in play at the end. Had the funniest swing of the day. We'll take that."
Matt had another tough day in the batter's box, swinging and missing on quite a few pitches and taking a pitch off his thumb that led to a mildly bloody injury.
Matt was able to drive one or two balls into the outfield, but as the only left-handed batter of the three, he had a distinct disadvantage against Long, who is also a southpaw.
"Matt, ugh," said Montgomery. "That's what Kenny does on the team, he gets out left-handed batters. It's hard for lefties to take good hacks off of him."
As for who was the most impressive, it was a clear decision.
"Who swung it the best today, I've got to go with Nick," Montgomery concluded. "He was able to put the ball in play, and I have him as the winner today. In the newsroom, he has bragging rights. That's for sure."
