Cedar Rapids, IA (KTIV) -
The Buena Vista baseball team captured its second-ever Iowa Conference Baseball Tournament championship on Saturday afternoon inside of Veterans Memorial Stadium with a walk-of 10-0 (7 inning) victory over third-seed Central College. The win sends BVU into the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Similar to yesterday's meeting with the Dutch, the bats got going from the outset, as the Beavers built a 5-0 lead after just two innings. Senior Ryan Titman put the Beavers on the board when he lined a 1-1 pitch down the left field line for a double to score Tanner Truesdell from second and move Bryce Wessels to third. Senior Nick Schlecht then hit a 1-0 pitch to center to score both runners and give BVU a 3-0 cushion. Later in the inning, senior Joe Paletta singled up the middle to score Schlecht from second before Brandon Wessels later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
Sophomore Justin Lange allowed just one hit through the first three frames and went on to pitch a career-best five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four.
A sacrifice fly from Paletta in the fourth scored Marshall and extended the lead to 6-0.
BVU went to its bullpen for the first time in the tournament to start the inning and got back-to-back shutout innings from Cam Beatty and Jacob Hadaway leading up to the thrilling finish in the seventh.
Senior Weston Foxx doubled to right center field to lead-off the frame before advancing to third on a Lambert single to right. Truesdell, who went 3-for-4 in the contest, singled home Foxx for a 7-0 margin before Bryce Wessels walked to load the bases.
Titman then took the first pitch he saw and singled to right to score Lambert, and after a pop out from Schlecht, a passed ball scored another run before Marshall, who also tallied three hits in the contest singled home pinch runner Shawn Liddell, as the Beaver dugout stormed towards home plate to celebrate their third trip into the NCAA Regional Tournament in the last five years.
Lambert and Titman each turned in two hits for BVU, which out-hit the Dutch, 13-2. For the tournament, BVU surrendered only three runs over the three games and used only five pitchers.
The win moves the Beavers to 36-7 on the year and they will now wait until early Monday morning to find out when and who they will play when the Regional Tournament gets underway on Wednesday, May 14.
