SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (KTIV) - Instead of bikes, you'll find calves tied up at Sergeant Bluff-Luton Elementary School.  It's not, Bring Your Calf to School Day, rather Farm to School Day.

"High schoolers bring their animals to school here to show us and teach us a few things," says Tanner Memmot, a fourth grader at SBL Elementary.

The animals come from local farms and the fourth graders are learning the ins and outs of agriculture, like the different products that come from farms that make up the pizza we eat.

"So you know what you're eating," says Tanner.

Tanner's been to a farm before, but many of his classmates haven't.  It's a new experience for Layce Klev.

"We get to see the animals and we get to touch the animals and we get to learn about them," says Layce Klev, a fourth grader at SBL Elementary.

"It's important to know about ag because it's the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the fuel in our vehicles, and it comes from somewhere and there's a whole group of people that have devoted their lives to producing this for people," says Melissa Keyes, an agriculture education specialist.

From petting sheep to combing a cow, it's an up-close, hands-on learning experience for the kids.  The lessons are taught by those who know it best, area farmers and 4-Hers.

"These kids, they live in a city and they don't generally go out and see what I see every day and they just need to be aware," says Dillon Weaver, a 4-H member from Moville, Iowa.

The whole goal for Farm to School Day is to expose kids to agriculture and the importance of it in our communities.  Even if they'll never step foot on a farm, at least they know a little something about them.

Farm to School Day is part of Siouxland Agriculture in the Classroom, a non-profit organization that provides agriculture education to our local schools.
