Fallen heroes honored in Madison County, Nebraska

MADISON, Neb. (KTIV/US92) - In Madison County, Nebraska people also took time to remember one of their fallen heroes.

Members of the Madison County Nebraska Sheriff's Department, Nebraska State Patrol and Norfolk Police Division took part in a memorial service for County Deputy Sheriff James Drahota who died while on patrol over five decades ago.

The local chapter of the American Legion riders brought a commemorative wreath from the State Patrol Headquarters to St. Leonard's Cemetery in Madison.

Department officials say it's important to remember the officers that lost their lives even after so many years.

Vern Hjorth, Madison County Sheriff said, "It's been, I believe, 52 years since he lost his life. We're here to celebrate that and show the appreciation of his service."

Deputy Drahota had been with the department for about five years, when he was killed in a car accident while trying to make a traffic stop.

About a dozen members of Drahota's family joined with law enforcement in taking part in Monday's ceremony.
