Siouxland Students are getting active with the Walking School Bus

It's not your typical school bus. There aren't any wheels to go round and round, but you will hear the pitter patter of little feet.

Kids from Sergeant Bluff-Luton Elementary took the Walking School Bus to class on Wednesday. It's a group of students and trained volunteers who walk together along a pre-established route.

The program makes the morning rush easier and safer for students, and Siouxland District Health officials say it also promotes good health through physical activity. The students say they like the walk because it gives them a chance to hang out with friends before going to school.

"It's a fun way to stay active and have fun," said 5th grader Beau Klingensmith.

"It's also really fun and it gives you a chance to walk with all your friends," said 3rd grader Carson Memmott.

"It's just a great chance to get to spend some time with your friends. Catch up on something that they've done over the past few days," said 5th grader Jack Gaukel.

"You can like be active and enjoy the outside," said 3rd grader Brooke Klingensmith.

Students at Sergeant Bluff-Luton schools who are participating in the program will have a chance to win 25 passes to the local pool.
