Hard Rock's casino dealers school will teach the ins and outs of blackjack
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Sioux City's first land based casino is seeking "entertainers," but not to perform on a typical stage. Instead, they would be behind a table, dealing cards.
Dealing blackjack, also known as 21, isn't as easy as it looks. There are several basic steps to master before you can hit the table.
"You need to get the shoe in position to where you can easily pull a card out. You're going to use your left hand, and just slide it straight down. And, as you come down, a little pressure will bring the card right out. The next step is to slide it out with your left hand, put it in your right hand, and set it down " Hard Rock Director of Table Games Dan Welch said.
Welch said to set the cards so that they're offset a little bit, that way you can see both of them clearly.
These are just a few of the beginning steps dealers-in-training would learn at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino dealer school.
"This process is like a five week interview. We need to see how the experienced dealers interact with people who are new. We also need to see how the new people take guidance from people who are experienced as well," Welch said.
When it comes to shuffling, Welch offered some advice he will explain to the dealers.
"You're not shuffling the whole front of the card. You're shuffling the corners, so that the corners overlap," Welch said.
Hard Rock's Director of Table Games said anyone can learn how to deal blackjack in five weeks. The final step of dealer school is putting all these skills together and dealing to a guest.
"Most of all, we're looking for the life of the party. We're looking for people to entertain. This is an entertainment job," Welch said.
"We're going to hire for character and train for skill. If it's right for you, you'll know it right away," Hard Rock General Manager Todd Moyer said.
Basic rules of the game like a player getting anything higher than 21 loses, terminology, and shuffling, will all be part of dealer school.
Welch said experienced and inexperienced dealers are welcome.
Hard Rock expects to hire more than 100 dealers.
The first day of dealer school is set to start May 27. There are a few more information sessions that will be held in the upcoming days at the Mid-American Energy building at 401 Douglas Street in Sioux City. The schedule is listed below.
