STORM LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) - An army soldier who grew up in Storm Lake, Iowa was pronounced dead in a non-combat incident while serving in Afghanistan.

Chief Warrant Officer Deric Rasmussen died on Sunday, May 11th.

Rasmussen was in Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom. Deric is survived by his family in Killeen, Texas, his wife Jennavieve, and three children, ages 4, 2, and 6 weeks old, as well as both parents and a younger sister.

His former teachers at Storm Lake High School remember him as someone who was always helping others.

"Helping people was so important to him, and I think that played across in so many ways throughout his life, his young life as a high schooler, as well as his adult life," Cindy Cone, Deric's former speech teacher said.
