Soldier with ties to Siouxland dies in Afghanistan

An army soldier who grew up in Storm Lake, Iowa has died in a non-combat incident in Afghanistan. Chief Warrant Officer Deric Rasmussen was serving in Operation Enduring Freedom. He died on Sunday, but we don't know the details of what happened. Rasmussen is survived by a wife and three young children, who live in Texas. One of his former high school teachers in Storm Lake, Cindy Cone, remembered him as someone who was always helping others.

Dakota Valley school wants to add $27 million to high school

Dakota Valley School officials held a meeting to fill folks in on an upcoming bond election. The district wants to expand the high school to accommodate an increase in students. The bond company said the $27 million project would not increase property taxes. It would be a two-story, 130,000 square foot addition with state of the art classrooms for technology and family and consumer science. There would also be a new commons area, a gym with three basketball courts, and a separate parking lot for the high school.

UPDATE: Sioux City Police identify victim in fatal accident on Highway 20

Sioux City police release the names of those involved in a deadly crash Wednesday morning. Michelle Hilburn of Sioux City was killed after the car she was driving went across the median on Highway 20 and struck a pickup truck head-on. They say Hilburn was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Michael Holbrook of South Sioux City was driving the pickup and was buckled in. He went to the hospital with moderate injuries, but was later released.

Iowa's task force study climate change

Iowa played host to one of President Barack Obama's hearings on climate change. Des Moines was the site for a meeting of local, state, and federal officials Wednesday. This was the third of four meetings being held across the country by the president's Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience. The event included discussions about preparing urban and agricultural areas for flooding, drought, and other weather-related disasters.
