The new 9/11 Museum opens Thursday in New York City

(NBC News) Almost 13 years after the terror attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, work on the 9/11 Memorial and Museum is complete.

President Obama will be a part of the dedication ceremony, the start of several days of tributes and special viewings for families, survivors, and responders before the museum opens to the public May 21.

Visitors granted early access are struck by the words and images from that horrific day.

The hallways and viewing areas are dimly lit, the spotlight focused on the pieces that remain, the people who died, the survivors and first responders.

It is sacred ground, a museum and memorial molded from the original footprint of the Twin Towers.
