Historic Orange City windmill gets a face lift in time for 2014 Tulip Festival

ORANGE CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - When you think of Orange City, Iowa, this time of year, you think of tulips, and you think of windmills.

One of Orange City's windmills got a facelift, just in time for the 2014 Tulip Festival.

"You know, we had peeling paint on the windmill, and you just can't have peeling paint in front of a paint factory. So it was time to refresh," Doug Vogel, Vice President of Diamond Vogel Paints said.

The Diamond Vogel Paints windmill is nearing its 50th birthday. It was built in 1967 by the founder of Vogel Paints, Andrew Vogel. He began on the project when he retired from the company.

"He built it as a way to kind of show what life was like back in the old country," Vogel said.

It's his grandfather's throwback tribute, to a life that was once his own.

"He grew up in Holland as a young man, and he moved when he was in his early teens. He has a lot of fond memories of living back in the day," Vogel said.

And now, the Vogel family is committed to keeping it up, but without compromising the historical accuracy.

"We've been doing some updating here in the last year, just kind of getting it spruced up, keeping it fresh and things. But a lot of things are as he built them," Vogel said.

Now that it's so fresh and clean, they're excited about keeping it open for tours, especially during the Tulip Festival.
