NEAR ONAWA, Iowa (KTIV) - The driver who police say crashed trying to get away from authorities in Monona County has passed away.

A deputy says he turned on his lights and siren after checking the speed of a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Hannah Steir of Onawa.

She had just gotten off Interstate 29 near Onawa.

However, investigators say Steir didn't stop, so a pursuit started.

It ended on a gravel road when her vehicle crashed in a ditch and hit an embankment.

Steir was ejected and the vehicle caught on fire.

She passed away late Monday night.

The accident is still under investigation.
