United Way looking for single parents to apply for scholarships


SIOUX CITY, Iowa (SUBMITTED) - Going back to school as an adult comes with many obstacles, both financial and logistical.

But single parents can encounter major challenges when trying to earn a college degree.

To help overcome those challenges the Women's Power Lunch Committee, in partnership with Women Aware are accepting applications for scholarships until May 29, 2014.

Proceeds of United Way of Siouxland's Women's Power Lunch, which was held on April 23, 2014, are directed to the single parent scholarship program.

Nearly 900 women attended this year's event to listen to the inspirational story from keynote speaker Tracey Gold.

"We are excited to announce that this year we were able to raise $25,000 to be dedicated to this program," says Doneen Conaway, Women's Power Lunch Chair. "This incredible program is truly a life changing experience for single parents; they are able to further their education to improve their life and the lives of their children."

Scholarship applications are available at United Way of Siouxland, Women Aware, and online at unitedwaysiouxland.com. The deadline for applications is Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 5:00PM.

Scholarship partners of the event include: Briar Cliff University, Morningside College, Northeast Community College, St. Luke's College, and Western Iowa Tech Community College.

Platinum sponsors of the event include: KTIV News 4, Mid-American Energy Company, Powell Broadcasting, Sioux City Journal, and Tyson Foods.
