CHICAGO, Ill. - Some Chicago homes are evacuated after a cache of decades-old dynamite was found in the basement of one of them.
Police said the caretaker for a 93-year-old man was cleaning up after sewage problems at the house. The man asked her to go down to the basement to bring up a suitcase.
It turned out it contained two dozen sticks of dynamite. She called authorities, and the county bomb squad arrived as neighbors were evacuated. The bomb squad took the dynamite to a quarry for destruction. No one was hurt in the incident and no charges will be filed.
The man was apparently holding the dynamite for a friend as a favor. Sixty years ago, the friend, who worked in construction, gave him a 50-pound suitcase filled with explosives for safe-keeping. The man headed to California and never came back.
