Tourism officials hope for a busy holiday weekend in the Iowa Great Lakes
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KTIV/KUOO) -
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KTIV)-Despite the rain in the forecast, tourism officials and business owners in the Iowa Great Lakes are hoping for a big crowd.
Tom Kuhlman, Executive Director of the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, says if the number of inquiries they've been getting is any indication, it's going to be another banner year. "We're getting very good numbers as far as people contacting us for information and the phone's ringing constantly and that's usually a good sign," Kuhlman said. "I think Memorial Day weekend is typically the big kickoff for the Lakes Area, with a lot of the businesses opening. It's good. It's looking like we're going to have a busy weekend."
Kuhlman says the fact the Iowa Great Lakes will be an overnight stop for RAGBRAI in July will also present a special marketing opportunity. "Many of those people have never experienced the Iowa Great Lakes Area before are going to be pretty impressed, I'm sure, with the quality of our lakes and our area, and all the amenities that surround us. It should be a good marketing effort," Kuhlman said.
Kuhlman says the number of visitors from just that one event alone, estimated in the neighborhood of 30,000, will be huge.
