The crash of a sport utility vehicle on I-29 sent one person to the hospital with serious injuries Thursday night. It happened in northbound lanes on the Hamilton Boulevard overpass at about 11:30 p.m. Police found the male driver inside the vehicle, unconscious but breathing. He was taken to Mercy Trauma Care with head injuries. Officers said it appears the SUV struck the metal guardrail on the right side of the roadway, then shot across both lanes and struck the concrete median on the other side. The identity of the injured man is not yet known.
Authorities release dash-cam video of a high-speed police chase through two Siouxland counties Thursday morning that came to a dramatic and abrupt end. The pursuit began near Sergeant Bluff when a driver was pulled over for acting suspiciously. Two men in the car fled and led authorities on a chase all the way to Ute, more than 50 miles away. The chase ended when officers executed what's called a "PIT" maneuver to force the car off the road and end a dangerous pursuit. The two men in the car went to the hospital. No word yet on who they are or how badly they were hurt.
The South Dakota Supreme Court is allowing Beef Product Incorporated's $1.2 billion defamation lawsuit against ABC news to proceed. The decision on Thursday allows the plaintiffs to potentially depose news anchor Diane Sawyer, two of the networks correspondents and other defendants. Dakota Dunes based BPI sued the network in 2012.
A Siouxland principal finds himself in a sticky situation. Students at Cardinal Elementary School in South Sioux City took turns duct-taping principal Dan Swatek to a wall on Thursday. He was making good on a promise to students from all grade levels that if they showed good progress throughout the school year, he would take the tape... and he did just that.
