Norfolk man turns yard into field of flags to honor fallen troops

A Siouxland yard has been transformed into a Memorial Day tribute thanks to the effort of a local resident.

Twenty-year old Thomas Landkamer has erected the Field of Flags in the yard of his home at 804 N. Birch St. in Norfolk, Nebraska.

The display features 92 flags and crosses bearing the names of each Nebraska soldier killed in the line of duty since the September 11th attacks.   Landkamer says the residents of the neighborhood have expressed appreciation for his efforts, and that for some the tribute hits close to home.

"The father of one of the fallen just lives a couple of blocks away. He came over and saw his son's cross and flag and left in tears. He was really impressed with it," said Landkamer.

Landkamer says he plans on displaying the Field of Flags every Memorial Day and Veterans Day from now on. The display is open to the public from dawn to dusk through Monday.
