Teen visits 'bucket list' of places before turning blind

Posted:

GRAETTINGER, Iowa (KTIV) - They said if it keeps progressing at this rate, then I'll be blind by, well, near the end of the summer," Cody Davis said.

13-year-old Cody Davis found out just a year ago that something he's depended on his whole life, his ability to see, would soon be gone forever.

"Right now it's kind of been going slow for us, not really slow because it's only been a year, but we've kind of adjusted day to day. But I think when it finally happens, it's going to hit us all, and it's going to hit us hard," Jodi Bonner, Cody's mom said.

Cody has Optic Nerve Atrophy, a disease that breaks down the nerve connection between the eye and the brain. But almost everyone diagnosed with the disease is over 40.

"At first, I was shocked. I cried a lot," Cody said.

But then, Cody bounced back.

"You'd think that going blind would be like, oh no, my life is over, but it's not. Personally, I think it's going to be completely normal, except I won't be able to see," Cody said.

Cody's made a bucket list of everything he wants to see one last time. He and his family are heading to Colorado, the St. Louis Arch, the beaches of Florida, and everywhere else he's requested.

Cody's new community of La Crosse, Wisconsin, is joining in the effort.

So is his hometown of Graettinger, Iowa with a good old fashioned pie-in-the-face fundraiser.

"Realizing that this young man was going to lose his sight, thinking about my own three children, I can't even imagine what that would be like. So I just wanted to do what we could to help," Shayla Hunefeld, Cody's former teacher said.

And on this trip of bucket list adventures, Cody says he's the most excited for one specific destination:

"We're going to go see the Bears beat down the Packers. I mean, I could sit there and watch anybody beat down the Packers," Cody said.

A memory in the making, for the whole family.
