Boys injured after man runs over tent during alcohol-fueled argument

OAKDALE, NE (US92/KTIV) - Four children were hurt and an Oakdale, Nebraska man has been arrested after an SUV plowed through a backyard and stuck a tent full of boys in an Oakdale backyard.

Antelope County Sheriff Bob Moore said, following an argument with his wife, 42-year old Stephen Barrington of Oakdale drove through the couple's backyard.  Moore said it happened around 10:45 p.m. Sunday.  Moore said Barrington accidentally struck a tent in the 700-block of 5th Street.  Five boys were in and around the tent.  Moore said four were hospitalized with various non life-threatening injuries.

"Three of the boys have been released. One boy is still at Faith Regional [in Norfolk]. Five boys were involved. They range in age from I believe nine years to 13 years of age," Moore said.

Moore said Barrington was over the legal limit of alcohol when got behind the wheel of his vehicle. Four rescue crews from Antelope Memorial Hospital, Midwest Medical and Tilden rushed to the scene. Three of the boys were treated and released at Antelope Memorial Hospital. The fourth remains in care at Faith Regional Health Services.

"Everything was so scattered in the backyard. He went over numerous things in that backyard when he went through the yard," Moore added.

Barrington was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. He's currently being held at the Antelope County Jail on $20,000 bond.
