Branstad signs bill for apprenticeship program

A bill that provides increased state funding and coordination for an apprenticeship program has been signed by Gov. Terry Branstad.

That program will train workers in skilled jobs including those in construction and information technology.

Branstad said a skilled workforce is extremely important and in high demand in Iowa.

To handle that demand, Facebook is investing almost $1 billion for a giant new data center already under construction in Altoona, Iowa. Microsoft and Google are joining Facebook by building data centers in the state.

The bill provides about $3 million for other job training programs that will continue to go through community colleges.

The Iowa Economic Development Authority will administer over $3 million for the program.
