Rain causes Mapleton to release untreated wastewater

Because of heavy rain, the community of Mapleton, Iowa was forced to release untreated wastewater starting Tuesday.

Mapleton started routing wastewater to polishing ponds back on May 15th to do repairs to a wall at the community's wastewater plant.

Monday's weather filled the ponds to capacity.

So, the city started releasing wastewater into the Maple River to prevent damage to the ponds.

Contractors are expected to complete the repairs by Wednesday or Thursday.

The DNR says people and pets should stay away from the area and out of the river for 24 hours after the repairs are completed.
