Woodbury County Supervisors take steps to hire courthouse security

Posted:

Woodbury County supervisors are a step closer to hiring security for the county courthouse.

Supervisors voted three to two to list job postings for Woodbury County Courthouse security at their meeting Tuesday. The supervisors approved the job descriptions, allowing those hired to be armed and make arrests.

Originally, the Woodbury County Sheriff's Department was going to provide the security. Members of the deputies union say providing courthouse security is still in their contract.

"I'm sure our union will look into issues related to our contract, as we do have court security outlined in our contract, and there are personnel in that particular position," Derek Brand, Deputies Union member said.

Woodbury County Supervisor Larry Clausen says, in his mind, there's no controversy. He says they hope to hire from a pool of retired law enforcement officers.

The Deputies Union says any outside courthouse security hire won't be cost effective, and the new hires will be "inexperienced."

Clausen says that's not the case.

"That's the reason I voted the way I did, is because I believe it is going to be more cost efficient," Clausen said. "Personnel costs alone, I don't have the figures in front of me, but I want to say it was close to $60,000 less."

Clausen says the positions will be posted on their website and advertised as soon as possible.
