Hard Rock Casino opening the beginning of August

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - Under construction for months, Sioux City's first, land-based casino will open its doors August 1.

The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino's general manager Todd Moyer announced Wednesday their facility will be officially open just one month after the Argosy Casino is scheduled to close the doors to the boat for the last time.

From concrete and power tools a true entertainment venue is finally taking shape.

General Manager Todd Moyer says the progress has been incredible to watch.

"The contractors and these skilled craftsman have been just amazing. And what's been most amazing is how they've worked with each other. A drywaller comes in, and right behind him someone's painting the wall, and then they're rolling carpet underneath them. It's just been a symphony," Moyer said.

And all of this, amidst an incredibly complicated legal battle.

The Hard Rock's nonprofit partner, Missouri River Historical Development, was once associated with the Argosy Casino.

When its partnership fell through and the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission put Woodbury County's gaming license up for bid, MRHD officials say they weren't sure what would happen.

"A couple years ago, we didn't know if this would happen or not. When the IRGC put it out for bid, we didn't have anybody that was going to work with us at that point," Monson said.

But now, the casino is truly beginning to take shape with the arrival of actual gaming machines, ready for setup and state inspection.

MRHD President Mark Monson says the arrival of the slot machines is symbolic of a big step forward for the casino, and means that MRHD will soon get back to doing what they were meant to do.

"We'll start receiving funds again, so we can do what we're supposed to do, which is provide funding to local nonprofits. Also, because of the increased amount of money we'll be getting, we as a board intend to get into some realm of economic development," Monson said.

As MRHD looks toward a productive future in the community of Sioux City, Moyer says he's looking forward to the future as well and some much needed relaxation when this whole project is finally finished.

"Personally, I can't wait to see Daughtry. I want to see the show with the Goo Goo Dolls. That's on August 30 and I'm probably going to kick back and relax and watch some great entertainment," said Moyer..
