SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - In March, Sioux City paramedics hosted a dodgeball tournament to help out one local non-profit. Friday, they donated the proceeds from that tournament.

The recipient of the $1,000 donation, the Food Bank of Siouxland.

The money will go toward food purchasing for the Food Bank's Backpack Program, which helps children at risk for hunger.

With the program slowing down now that school is out for the summer, this is a welcome and needed donation.

"All donations make a tremendous difference," said executive director Linda Scheid. "Each sack costs us about $4. You can see the need for financial support for the program is very high, and yet this program is so critical."

About 2,000 sacks per week will be sent out starting the first week of October.

Scheid says that the costs for the program will exceed $200,000 for the year.
