Sidewalk saga to come to an end behind Bev's on the River

Three years after flood waters damaged Sioux City's riverfront there's still work to be done.

Cracked concrete along a trail behind Bev's on the River and the Hilton Garden Inn is a reminder of the 2011 flood.

FEMA determined that the damage was caused by the million-dollar berm the owners built to protect their business, not the water.

However, a development agreement between Sioux City and the property owners calls for the city to maintain the trail.

That meant the work had to wait until the city could find money to pay for it.  However, city officials say other circumstances also slowed down the project.

"Just as it took a longer time frame to compile all the different contracts and find the availability of staff to do that, that's been the delay,” said Glenn Ellis, City Engineer.

The cost is 22% under the engineer's estimate, at $27,000.

It's a relatively minor project compared to other flood reconstruction work.

Work will get underway in two weeks and be done by the end of June.
