State Rep. Susan Wismer of Britton wins Democratic bid for South Dakota governor

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- State Rep. Susan Wismer has won the Democratic bid for South Dakota governor.

She defeated the former head of the state's wildfire agency, Joe Lowe.

Wismer has been in the Legislature since 2009. The accountant from Britton has criticized Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard for cutting spending on education and health care.

She says she wants to help educate children of all income levels and provide jobs with good wages.

Wismer will face a tough challenge in November, when she'll vie against the popular Daugaard in a heavily Republican state. South Dakota hasn't elected a Democrat as governor since the 1974 election.

Wismer and Daugaard will meet former University of South Dakota professor Mike Myers, who's running as an independent.
