DES MOINES, Iowa (KTIV) - Sioux City West made their fourth straight trip to the boys state soccer tournament, but are headed home after a 2-1 loss in a shootout against Cedar Rapids Washington.

The third-seeded Wolverines got on the board in the 33rd minutes of the first half when Richard Moncada buried a shot in the top corner for the 1-0 lead.

Washington, seeded sixth in Class 3A, got it back in the second half. In the 64th minute, Jacob Bjornsen passed to AJ Patterson who finished in front of the net to make it 1-1.

Late in the second half, West thought they had scored the go-ahead goal. Juan Carlos Perez got behind the defense for a goal but was called for offsides and the goal was disallowed and the game went to overtime.

It was still tied through two extra periods so the match was decided by penalty kicks. West and Washington were tied through their first six attempts. On the seventh try, the Warriors bury their shot. Perez's shot was blocked and West falls 2-1 in a shootout.

"That goal we made, it was off a corner kick, and Richard finished it really well," said West senior Jesse Mondragon. "I thought we were going to win it so we just have to try harder."

"When you get into games like that and it comes down to penalty kicks, it's anybody's game," said West head coach Gary Fuentes. "It's a lot of pressure on the guys. We had a great season. They played well. We have nothing to be disappointed about."

The Wolverines finish the season with an 18-2 record.
