Riviera Theatre offers VIP cards to fund upgrades

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - The movie industry has changed a lot since the 1970's, and one Sioux City theater wants to make sure it's keeping up with the times, but also keeping prices affordable.

That's why Riviera's owner is hoping the moviegoers help out. Eric Hilsabeck said normally the theater would take out a loan for upgrades, but that would cause ticket prices to rise. His goal is to replace all the seats in the theaters, which are more than 40 years old.

He wants to accomplish this by "crowd funding." "What crowd funding does, it allows people to come in and purchase a VIP card and for that, they get a reward. And, what we do with the money that they purchase the card with is we take that money and it goes to our seats," Riviera Owner Eric Hilsabeck said.

VIP cards cost $200 each .Cardholders have unlimited access to all movies and special events at the Riviera for an entire year.

Hilsabeck said replacing every seat in the theater with new chairs would cost $74,000. But, as soon as a certain amount of cards are sold, they will start upgrading one theater at a time.
