185th Air Refueling Wing welcomes new commander

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - Men and women in uniform witnessed a momentous change in history at the 185th Air Refueling Wing on Saturday.

"It's been a lifelong dream because I've been in this unit almost 28 years," Colonel Larry Christensen said.

Colonel Christensen assumed command of 950 members of the Iowa Air National Guard, and received his first salute, as Colonel Brian Miller relinquished his duties after decades of serving our nation and our community.

"On a day like today, there is some sadness, and there's also a lot of joy too. There are things we love about the military, and after 34.5 years there are some things we don't love quite as much as we used to, so again it's time to move on," Colonel Brian Miller said.

Colonel Miller said he knows the wing will be in great hands.

"I leave happy knowing all 950 will excel under Larry's command and his outstanding senior leadership team," Colonel Miller said.

"Getting the wing from Colonel Brian Miller is a huge honor because of all the things he's done in the last 7 years to make this place successful," Colonel Christensen said.

But, Colonel Christensen said he's ready for whatever comes his way. As the Commander, Christensen assumes many responsibilities from training the troops to making sure the wing is effectively spending taxpayer dollars.

"The biggest challenge will probably be the fiscal changes, having to do things with less, that will probably be the biggest challenge," Colonel Christensen said.

"I started out flying A-7, went on to the F-16, then went on to the KC-135 model, and now the R model, so I've got a lot of history here, and after all that history, now being able to be in charge of it, I can't tell you how big of an honor that is," Christensen said.

"I know with Colonel Christensen going forward, we're going to be even better than before," 185th Air Refueling Wing Master Sergeant First Sergeant Martin Divis said.

And, Colonel Christensen is looking forward to everything the future holds for the 185th Air Refueling Wing.

Colonel Christensen is a Sioux City native.

Before taking over this role, Christensen served as the Operation Group Commander of the 185th.
