Art project celebrating leaders in fight against discrimination planned for downtown Sioux City

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - A new art project is officially underway for downtown Sioux City.

The Celebrating Community Project will line the sidewalk outside of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Transportation Center.

It will feature 13 busts of Siouxland Community members who have fought against some kind of discrimination.

The project, done by Siouxland sculptor Mark Avery, is in partnership with the NAACP and other organizations in Siouxland that fight against discrimination.

It celebrates the leaders who have helped that fight.

"Their leadership style is one most of the time of working behind the scenes tirelessly. I can't remember one person that we've honored for this project that really wanted it. They were doing the work for the right reasons," Mark Avery, the commissioned sculptor said.
