Morningside home removed from red-tag list

Posted:

A historic Sioux City house is saved from the wrecking ball.  The Dutton Home has stood in the Morningside neighborhood since 1888.

A fire three years ago put the historic home on the red tag list.

City leaders delayed demolition several times as different owners tried to make a go of renovating it, drawing the ire of neighbors, concerned that the work would never be finished.

Bryan and Netha Wise took over the project last fall and were given a 90-day extension in January.

When the work wasn't done in time, they were given until today to finish the required repairs.

Netha says they worked up until the city inspector arrived.

"This will set a great precedent. I feel like we're a pioneer, kind of forging the way to make new guidelines and regulations for the city for people behind us doing the same type of work," she said.

Wise says the city ordinance should take into account the size and extent of the project rather than assigning an arbitrary 90-day deadline.

Council members worried about setting a precedent with extending the deadline on the Dutton home.

"If it's a bigger project, a bigger home that needs to be saved, it's going to take more time and maybe the 90 days isn't sufficient. I think we do need to review that. I think we want to treat as many people as equally as we can,” said Moore.

Even though the home is now livable, the Wise family will wait until the fall to move in, after the two story addition they're building is finished.
