Sioux City-owned properties dwindle down

The city of Sioux City owns just three properties suitable for building a home.

Officials estimate that, at one time, the city controlled as many as 40 in-fill properties.  Those are empty lots hooked up to utilities, many where homes have been torn down.

In the 80's, the city was actually in the business of building and selling homes.

Not any more.

The city has sold most of the parcels to private developers and non-profit organizations.

"We're not a landlord. We don't want to be a landlord. We want to leave that up to the property owners and developers in Sioux City,” explained Jeff Hanson, Community Development Operations Manager.

Because of the policy change, Hanson said he doesn't see any more in-fill properties coming under city control in the future.
