Bishop Heelan beat Bondurant-Farrar, 5-0, in their state soccer opener on Thursday.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Bishop Heelan won their opening game at the girls state soccer tournament, 5-0, over Bondurant-Farrar. Heelan will now play Davenport Assumption in the Class 1A semifinals on Friday at noon.
The top-ranked Crusaders led the 11th-ranked Bluejays 3-0 at halftime. Jessica Brown scored the first goal of the game at the ten-minute mark on an assist from Chloe Wetzbarger. Just a minute later Amber Lingle doubled Heelan's lead, scoring after a pass from Sam Tymkowicz. Lauren Bleeker capped the first half scoring at the 16-minute mark with an unassisted goal.
Wetzbarger scored early in the second half after another helper from Tymkowwicz to make it 4-0. Rachel Vondrak scored the final goal of the game on a penalty kick at the 48-minute mark.
Heelan will now play the three-time defending state champions from Davenport Assumption in the semifinals. Fifth-ranked Assumption beat Waterloo Columbus 5-1 in their first round game to improve to 16-4.
The Crusaders have lost in the title game to the Knights each of the last two years. The semifinal match will be at noon on Friday and the Class 1A title game is Saturday at 11:00 A.M.
