Early Friday morning, Sioux City officially became a two airline town once again. The Sioux Gateway Airport was full of life as Frontier Airlines' Airbus 319 loaded up with 130 people bound for Denver, Colorado.
"We've got a great crowd of people here filling up the aircraft to go out for the first time to Denver [Friday]. We're just happy that everyone came out [Friday] morning to celebrate this event," said Sioux Gateway Airport Director Curt Miller.
"This is the busiest I've seen this airport in quite a few years," said City Manager Bob Padmore's nice to see it being used. A lot of people here. We have a beautiful airport that's been recently redone and we get to use it like it was built to be used."
Before the flight could take-off, a ribbon was cut, welcoming Frontier back to Sioux City. Local dignitaries, including Mayor Bob Scott, Airport Director Curt Miller and City Manager Bob Padmore were on hand for the celebration.
"It's very exciting for the city of Sioux City to be able to offer Frontier flights," said Padmore.
The carrier first came to town to much fanfare in 2007, but pulled out just eight months later. Officials are optimistic Frontier Airlines will have a longer run this time, and bring more options to Sioux City Passangers.
"Ultimately, we'd like Frontier to be successful enough that they add more flights that go to additional destinations; and, we'd like to think that just the excitement generated will also help American, and cause them to look at going to additional destinations besides Chicago also."
For the time being Frontier's onedestinationn is a popular one with 94 percent of the seats are already full for June.
"It proves that what we've been saying all along, that we've got a lot of demand here," said Miller. "With good airlines and good fares, we can fill seats. We've been telling airlines that for a number of years now trying to get new service and really this has taken off better than everybody's expectations already."
Frontier will have three flights per week into and out of Sioux Gateway, with service to Denver. Flights in are on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Flights out are Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
