Flooded Sioux City golf course sinks Father's Day plans
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
On holidays like Father's Day, many make special plans to celebrate, but for more than 100 dads in our area, those plans were drowned out by Saturday night's storm.
"Everywhere you looked, it was nothing but lakes," Green Valley Head Gold Professional Nick Wanderscheid said.
Green Valley Golf Course was mostly under water Sunday morning following Saturday night's strong and severe thunderstorms.
"This is my 13th year here at Green Valley, and I have never seen as much water on this golf course," Wanderscheid said.
More than six inches of water covering the course left employees no choice, but to call off the annual Father-Child golf tournament.
"We had 130 golfers signed up, paid, ready to go. It's one of our favorite days down here. It's a great day for the golf course. It's a great day for our customers, and unfortunately, we've had to cancel that," Wanderscheid said.
About 10 holes were completely impassible Sunday morning, but by afternoon, much of the water had receded.
"It's already gone down quite a lot in a few hours, so we'll be fine," Wanderscheid said
But, those men planning on celebrating their special day on the greens will have to wait until next Father's Day.
"This one's hard to re-schedule. I don't think we'll be able to pull it off, but it'll just make everybody that excited to play next year," Wanderscheid said.
Employees at Green Valley said they hope to be back open tomorrow, but if you plan on hitting the course, check before you go.
