The National Weather Service has advised that the Rock River at Rock Rapids is going to rise another 4 feet which is 3 feet higher that the 1993 flood (approx. 28.3 feet).
We do not feel that we can successfully sandbag if the river rises that high. There is going to be a MANDATORY evacuation of the 500 block to the 900 block of Tama street in Rock Rapids and all of Benton street and everything in between. Fire Dept. personnel and law enforcement are going door to door evacuating residents at these locations.
People are out of their homes tonight in Northwest Iowa not because of tornadoes, but because of heavy flooding and a gas leak in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
The Sheriff says this storm is unlike anything they've ever experience here in Rock Rapids.
Along, with the flooding, there is also a gas leak just north of town that they can't pinpoint at this point because there is so much water. The Sheriff says they've evacuated that area of the city. The city of Alvord was also evacuated this evening, and the Sheriff is recommending absolutely no travel in Lyon County.
Authorities in Lyon County report basements collapsing and many road closures due to the high water levels.
Island Park is also completely submerged under water.
There have been no reports of fatalities and no injuries, and they are still looking at the possibility of calling in the National Guard.
But the sheriff says he hasn't seen flooding this bad in 30 years.
"We do prepare through the years and we learn from other floods. This is definitely a learning situation tonight. We are, again Mother Nature shows us that we can be mighty small compared to mother nature," Lyon County Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep said.
By Monday evening, they set up a shelter for those in need at Central Lyon High School
